Photo Planning (Music Magazine)

Location, props, people, costumes and timings

My location of my photo-shoot will either be outside with nature or inside with a plain black or white background, utilizing the plain background I will go into an editing software (Such as Photoshop) and edit it up to make it look better.

For my main image photo I will need a few props. As I am doing a rap magazine, I believe that I will need a hoodie or jacket, a hat and a lot of money. Monopoly money. This is because I will have someone drop lots of money over my main star while he poses in different ways, both sitting and standing.

I will only need 2-3 people and that is for the money drop part on the main image, the rest of the magazine can just be me and my main star in different locations.

I will only need one or two different costumes for when I take my photo shoot. The first costume will be. Any kind of shoes, Black jeans, Black hoodie and black hat. The second costume will most likely have all of that without the hoodie. My shoots will have many different angles. Low shot, High shot, Medium and close up. These different shots allow me to capture everything he is wearing.

Timings. There will only be one timing when shooting. This would be the drop of the money on my actors head. Other than that, there will be nothing.

Font, Colour and Style (Music Magazine)

Font, Colour and Style

In my magazine I want my text to stand out to people in addition to making it readable and nice for the eye. The font that I have chosen and I will use for text is Franklin Gothic Heavy because it does stand out, it is readable and it is nice for the eye. For Headings, I want to use the font Nirmala UI Bold, this is because it is a really thick and chunky font. It again, stands out to the reader and allows them to know what they are searching for. On my double page spread, the heading will be in a bright red colour. This simply adds to the stand out factor.

My house style throughout the whole of my magazine have already been decided. Black, white, red and grey. Three of these colours (Black, white and grey) can be considered dull. However, they do work with the red. As it is a rap magazine, I felt as if I needed to partially follow the standards of a grimy look with the darker colours but also alleviate the darkness with the brighter colours. The colours of large amounts of text will be black throughout the magazine, this is because it is readable on a mid light grey background.

Questionnaire Analysis (Music Magazine)

Questionnaire Analysis

1.      Are you male or female?

The answers to this were male or female, for the questionnaires I handed out there were a 50/50 split on genders which came as a surprise as I didn't intend for this to happen, however it allowed a gender equal feedback.

2.      Do you like music?

The answers to this were yes or no; this was a pretty obvious question to answer as everyone likes some sort of music. 100% of people circled yes and no one even hesitated on it.

3.      What is your age in-between these selections?

Here are the answers to the questions:

10-15        16-25        26-35        36-45        45+

I handed out six questionnaires to people, 1 of them was in the 10-15 regions, 2 were 16-25 and the last 3 were in 26-35. For this question there wasn't as much variety as I hoped as I could have got a few more ideas for my magazine if there were older people.

4.      How often do you listen to music?

Here are the answers to the questions:

1hr/week        2hr/week        3hr/week        4hr/week        5hr+/week

2/3 of the people questioned listened to 5 plus hours of music a week, however the other 1/3 were on the 2 hours a week section.

5.      Who are your favorite 3 artists?

Here, I gave them a choice of their own on their favorite 3 artists. However there was no specific trend within a specific artist. Personally I believe this is an anomaly within my results. I will not question more people as I decided on six questionnaires.

6.      How often should the magazine come out?

For this question I gave the option of once a week or once a month. Everyone put once a month which I believe flows to the 8th and  10th question which was the pricing of the magazine, monthly seems like it would cost more and that’s where it links in the questionnaire.

7.      What are your top 3 genres of music?

Here, I gave them another few choices of their own. The genres that popped up in popularity were, Pop, then rap, then rock. My magazine will be a rap magazine, therefore I can cater to the ones who enjoy rap.

8.      How often do you read music magazines?

Here are the answers I gave:

Daily        Weekly        Monthly        Yearly        Never

Linking to the 6th questions analysis, 100% of them said they wanted once a month.  In this question it seems that they only read magazines on a monthly basis – which in my eyes doesn’t seem like too bad of a plan for my magazine as it will draw in the majority if they want monthly.

9.      How do you access music?

For this question I gave the options of the internet, CDs or vinyl. 5/6 chose the internet on how they access music. The alternative person chose CDs. Within my magazine I could promote a website as the majority of my answers were regarding the internet.

10.  How much would you pay for a music magazine?

The majority of the people I asked went for the £3.99 mark as they said it to be a monthly magazine, however someone else bumped it up to £5 as they thought it would be a reasonable price for a good magazine.

11.  Where do you purchase your music?

I gave the options of Online and in store. 5/6 chose online as this links to question 9. The alternative person chose in store as they liked CDs.

For all the information I got from my questionnaires, I will use the majority’s idea of having my magazine at £3.99. From the start, I decided to have a rap magazine. As rap is some people’s favourite genre I can cater to them. Also, the reasoning for this is because most of the people who chose to do the questionnaire were younger, again, most likely catering to them.

What are my cover lines going to be? (Music magazine)

Cover lines on my magazine
On my magazine I will have cover lines on most pages. They will either be offers or big news directing you to somewhere else in the magazine. On the front page there will be two cover lines, one an offer for something and another linking you to the main rappers double page spread about his life; this will link to the main image as my magazine will be a special edition for this specific rapper. For the cover lines and the text that is within them, I will use some rhetorical questions and alliteration. The offer will most likely be to win an unreleased soundtrack just by entering online. This will catch people’s eyes because there will be something no one else has and people like that kind of thing. On the contents page, there will be one cover line. This will be linking to another page in the magazine regarding the main rappers new mix tape and where you can get it from. As this is the only cover line, I will make it stand out as much as possible. For the double page spread there will be no cover lines whatsoever, this allows me to talk about the main rapper throughout the whole two pages.

What Institution do I want? (Music Magazine)

Institution

Development hell will be my institution to promote my magazine; this is because they have apps with their company. This can be implemented with my magazine. As my target audience is teenage boys they will surely have a smartphone. This will then allow them to interact with the magazine online. As they already are publishing the dance magazine mixmag which has an app and a website. Again, this could be implemented into my magazine and its ideals as it will appeal to my audience. Also, as most people nowadays are actually connected to the internet, I believe that this could expand the target audience to people who have never experienced rap or never had an interest into it to fully listen to it or read it.

Target Audience Stereotypes (Music Magazine)

Target Audience/Stereotypes

With my rap magazine, I have targeted the social group/stereotype of teenage boys that stereo typically wear tracksuits all the time. The way I represented my main star on the front page is the way my target audience is stereotyped to look like, however as they read further into the magazine the way the story represents my main star is in a good light. He raps about things other than guns, killing, drugs, sex and death.. There are a few colours on my magazine, mainly black and red. Through research, I have seen that a lot of the magazines regarding rap follow a colour scheme just like this so for the intended audience it won’t be too much of a change within the colour department. The language I have used on my front page is informal which links to my research of rap magazines. My Target audience isn't really formal or higher class.

Magazine Name idea (Music Magazine)

Magazine Title

I made a tally chart with a few choices of name of my magazine. The tally follows:

§  ASR (AS Media Rap)
5 Marks
§  Shift
6 Marks
§  Control
2 Marks
§  ICC (Inner City Culturals)
11 Marks

For the people that joined in on the tally they chose the ‘ICC’ title which I will probably use in my magazine, if when creating the magazine and it doesn’t look right, I will choose ‘Shift’ for the title.

Double page draft (Music magazine)

Music magazine double page draft

Here, the double page spread page has minimal colour, it is just on the album which I need to create. This album will probably be pink/purple like the drawing. When I create the final product, it will be full of colour. Also, this double page spread probably wont be like the final product, I am yet to decide on whether to set it out differently or something.

Audience feedback: The people that I asked to feedback on my draft said i needed to change a few things:

  • The image of GP needs to be a close up, instead of a long camera shot.
  • The writing needs to draw people in to want to read more.
  • More colour is needed.
All of these things are things I will take into account.

Contents draft (Music magazine)

Music magazine contents draft

Here, the contents page has no colour whatsoever. However, when I create the final product, it will be full of colour. Also, this contents page probably wont be like the final product, I am yet to decide on whether to set it out differently.

Audience feedback: The people that I asked to feedback on my draft said i needed to change a few things:
  • Make the image a medium shot of a rapper. Not a long shot looking away from the camera.
  • Make the album ad smaller to only get to the halfway point horizontally.
  • More page numbers.
  • More colour.

All of these things are things I will take into account.

Front cover draft (Music magazine)

Music magazine front cover draft

Here, my front cover is more or less how I want my magazine. However in my final product, I believe that it'll be completely different because of editing purposes.

Audience feedback: The people that I asked to feedback on my draft said i needed to change a few things:

  • More cover lines.
  • Background colour.

All of these things are things I will take into account.

School Magazine Mock Idea Contents Page

Contents Page

Here is my contents page, as it is the mock up it is very minimal with no colour. But again, as I said on the front cover blog post, I will make sure that the magazine is colourful. For the layout of both, I will most likely follow how it looks but edit the kind of images that will be used.

Mock up

Here is the school magazine draft mock up. There isn't colour other than the red and black, this will be changed in the final product. I will attempt to make it as colourful as I can without making it look idiotic. I just want it to stand out to the audience.

Magazine Research (International School)

Magazine Research

For this last magazine there is a main colour scheme of blue and white, the children’s uniforms are blue as is the logo, there is white in the background of the children. The whole magazine itself gives of a simple but professional look with these colours. The white allows the blue to stand out to its full potential and it is able to be seen from far away. In the bottom right, there is another little logo which can catch your eye and it also follows the house colours.

The dating and volume is also something that is well placed and allows the reader to understand what they're buying. The dating and volume are coloured white while being on the child’s dark blue jumper meaning it is really noticeable and strands out easily.

The image of the children seems to give off a vibe to parents that primary school is a happy place. The image shows two young girls playing together as the main part of the image. The magazine also shows other young girls in the background also having fun. As this magazine is aimed at parents I believe that the happiness of these children might be a selling point to the parents as the parents will want their children to be as happy as possible. The image is also an action shot, this is unusual for many school magazines as they usually have main person posed.

As this magazine is aimed at parents and is about the primary area of school, the strapline is actually in the middle of the page to stand out for all to see. ‘Focus on the primary sector’, this strapline isn't very catchy however it get the main point across that this magazine in fact, actually does focus on the primary sector and this will act as another selling point

Magazine Research (College Life)

Magazine research

For the second magazine it has a colour scheme of orange, white and a blue/green background. These colours aren't the main attraction of this magazine as there is a female student with bright skin and a pile of books which sticks out to the readers. She is smiling which can indicate the same thing as the first magazine, that she’s enjoying college and it’s a great place to be all of the time. You know she’s a college student as she is holding books and folders to show she does a lot of work.

There are cover lines on the side which usually link to stories inside the magazine, such as the ‘healthy eating on a college budget’ some readers may look at this and feel as if they have to buy it as they are not very good with their money and usually spending money on rubbish. Another example is the fact that they used the colour red in one of the advertisements; the ad for the valentine’s gift has large red love hearts to catch the reader’s eye. Red is usually associated with love so this is why red is there. This again creates urgency to buy the “College life’s” product.

All of the magazines are competing to be bought in the shops for people’s cash, at the top; above the masthead there is a banner showing that this magazine is apparently “The best source for all things about college life”. A lot of the magazines create this urgency to buy their product as it may be the best magazine or the most descriptive or even the magazine with the best gossip. The wordings the magazines use are words such as ‘best’ or ‘first’, this makes it seem as if this magazine the reader is looking at is actually the number one mag to buy.

Magazine Research (College Lifestyle)

Magazine Research

For this magazine, there is a colour scheme of black and yellow. The black background allows the yellow to stand out when in the magazine shop to draw people in to take a look at what the magazine is about and what is included inside. I feel that the yellow colour can indicate that you will have a bright future as yellow is, in my eyes one of the brightest colours. There is also the text which is white allowing it to be easily read on the dark background. The student is also following the colour scheme with his clothing, his coat is black and his t shirt is white.

The masthead is in yellow, however even though it really noticeable and catches your eye, the main image is covering some of it up to make main image stand out and focus your eyes on it. The main image is the student gazing into the readers eyes with a smile to show as if he’s enjoying his time at this specific college; this could translate into the fact that he’s smiling about the college so the magazine must be as good as he’s implying.

The magazine has a strapline underneath the masthead, this can sometimes be a funny slogan, and however in this case it seems to be that it’s actually giving some information off to allow the reader to have a rough idea on what it’s about. ‘Lifestyle’ can indicate that it’s the life within the specific college and how the students live inside college. If the magazine didn't have ‘Lifestyle’ it probably wouldn't make too much of a difference but some people might think it’s about college in general and not the students’ lives and what they do in college.

Above the masthead there is a small banner saying that this magazine has everything you need to know. Using the word ‘need’ creates urgency pushing the viewer to buy the product. It also shows the date of the magazine in yellow to prompt the reader that they are buying the most up to date edition. Lastly the magazine also advertises the fact they have a website. This is posted just underneath the masthead.

Singular Contents page research Q magazine

Contents Page Research
For this content page of Q magazine, it has one really large image of Adele; it takes up nearly half of the page, it is also a close up shot of Adele’s face, she is giving a gaze into the readers eye. Adele is the main image of the magazine as she seems to be the most important story, also as she’s an iconic figure with a lot of top hit songs. At the bottom of the picture it has a white box that stands out to the eye with the page number offering information that is trying to lure you in to read the page of which Adele is on.

The house style of Q magazine is red and white. The red and white can make the consumer remind them of other top brands. Red and white can link to KFC which is one of the biggest fast food chains in the world. Also, going through house style there is the font. The magazine Q’s font, is only really used in Q magazine, therefore if someone is an avid reader of the magazine and notices the font somewhere it might link back to the remembrance of the magazine.
Q also has a review section of their magazine in their contents page. It’s as if Q has its own opinion and its creating a persona. The review on this contents page of the Q magazine is the second thing you notice within the contents page. The Q review has a strapline saying ‘The world’s biggest and best music guide’ instantaneously indicating they are the go to magazine for reviews. The review tab at the bottom has numbers linking to the end of the magazine with many different reviews going from page 124 to page 170.
The content down the side has three sub-sections on this specific magazine. Starting with features, showing things in the magazine that can change up every week. Each heading has a small subheading allowing you to find out a bit more of what is on those pages. Next there is the ‘Women in music’ which I believe is a special section for this edition as it is highlighted to stand out. Lastly there is the ‘Every month’ tab which has content which re-occurs from every month’s magazine, this includes crosswords, fan mail and top 50s.
The target audience is people who really  enjoy music that are in their twenties, I believe that the magazine itself actually attracts the target audience by showing off an iconic figure such as Adele who is on the contents page on this specific edition of Q magazine. As this edition is mainly centred on women in music, this can indicate that the main target audience of this edition is slightly leaning over to the women’s side.
The purpose of the contents page is to inform you of where everything is and show a bit of information within that. This magazine is really effective at putting the contents page across; it is clean and simple with the contents on the side with a split where the images are on the right taking up most of the page. Anyone who looks at this page won’t get lost of where they are looking.
