Photo Planning (Music Magazine)

Location, props, people, costumes and timings

My location of my photo-shoot will either be outside with nature or inside with a plain black or white background, utilizing the plain background I will go into an editing software (Such as Photoshop) and edit it up to make it look better.

For my main image photo I will need a few props. As I am doing a rap magazine, I believe that I will need a hoodie or jacket, a hat and a lot of money. Monopoly money. This is because I will have someone drop lots of money over my main star while he poses in different ways, both sitting and standing.

I will only need 2-3 people and that is for the money drop part on the main image, the rest of the magazine can just be me and my main star in different locations.

I will only need one or two different costumes for when I take my photo shoot. The first costume will be. Any kind of shoes, Black jeans, Black hoodie and black hat. The second costume will most likely have all of that without the hoodie. My shoots will have many different angles. Low shot, High shot, Medium and close up. These different shots allow me to capture everything he is wearing.

Timings. There will only be one timing when shooting. This would be the drop of the money on my actors head. Other than that, there will be nothing.

Font, Colour and Style (Music Magazine)

Font, Colour and Style

In my magazine I want my text to stand out to people in addition to making it readable and nice for the eye. The font that I have chosen and I will use for text is Franklin Gothic Heavy because it does stand out, it is readable and it is nice for the eye. For Headings, I want to use the font Nirmala UI Bold, this is because it is a really thick and chunky font. It again, stands out to the reader and allows them to know what they are searching for. On my double page spread, the heading will be in a bright red colour. This simply adds to the stand out factor.

My house style throughout the whole of my magazine have already been decided. Black, white, red and grey. Three of these colours (Black, white and grey) can be considered dull. However, they do work with the red. As it is a rap magazine, I felt as if I needed to partially follow the standards of a grimy look with the darker colours but also alleviate the darkness with the brighter colours. The colours of large amounts of text will be black throughout the magazine, this is because it is readable on a mid light grey background.

Questionnaire Analysis (Music Magazine)

Questionnaire Analysis

1.      Are you male or female?

The answers to this were male or female, for the questionnaires I handed out there were a 50/50 split on genders which came as a surprise as I didn't intend for this to happen, however it allowed a gender equal feedback.

2.      Do you like music?

The answers to this were yes or no; this was a pretty obvious question to answer as everyone likes some sort of music. 100% of people circled yes and no one even hesitated on it.

3.      What is your age in-between these selections?

Here are the answers to the questions:

10-15        16-25        26-35        36-45        45+

I handed out six questionnaires to people, 1 of them was in the 10-15 regions, 2 were 16-25 and the last 3 were in 26-35. For this question there wasn't as much variety as I hoped as I could have got a few more ideas for my magazine if there were older people.

4.      How often do you listen to music?

Here are the answers to the questions:

1hr/week        2hr/week        3hr/week        4hr/week        5hr+/week

2/3 of the people questioned listened to 5 plus hours of music a week, however the other 1/3 were on the 2 hours a week section.

5.      Who are your favorite 3 artists?

Here, I gave them a choice of their own on their favorite 3 artists. However there was no specific trend within a specific artist. Personally I believe this is an anomaly within my results. I will not question more people as I decided on six questionnaires.

6.      How often should the magazine come out?

For this question I gave the option of once a week or once a month. Everyone put once a month which I believe flows to the 8th and  10th question which was the pricing of the magazine, monthly seems like it would cost more and that’s where it links in the questionnaire.

7.      What are your top 3 genres of music?

Here, I gave them another few choices of their own. The genres that popped up in popularity were, Pop, then rap, then rock. My magazine will be a rap magazine, therefore I can cater to the ones who enjoy rap.

8.      How often do you read music magazines?

Here are the answers I gave:

Daily        Weekly        Monthly        Yearly        Never

Linking to the 6th questions analysis, 100% of them said they wanted once a month.  In this question it seems that they only read magazines on a monthly basis – which in my eyes doesn’t seem like too bad of a plan for my magazine as it will draw in the majority if they want monthly.

9.      How do you access music?

For this question I gave the options of the internet, CDs or vinyl. 5/6 chose the internet on how they access music. The alternative person chose CDs. Within my magazine I could promote a website as the majority of my answers were regarding the internet.

10.  How much would you pay for a music magazine?

The majority of the people I asked went for the £3.99 mark as they said it to be a monthly magazine, however someone else bumped it up to £5 as they thought it would be a reasonable price for a good magazine.

11.  Where do you purchase your music?

I gave the options of Online and in store. 5/6 chose online as this links to question 9. The alternative person chose in store as they liked CDs.

For all the information I got from my questionnaires, I will use the majority’s idea of having my magazine at £3.99. From the start, I decided to have a rap magazine. As rap is some people’s favourite genre I can cater to them. Also, the reasoning for this is because most of the people who chose to do the questionnaire were younger, again, most likely catering to them.

What are my cover lines going to be? (Music magazine)

Cover lines on my magazine
On my magazine I will have cover lines on most pages. They will either be offers or big news directing you to somewhere else in the magazine. On the front page there will be two cover lines, one an offer for something and another linking you to the main rappers double page spread about his life; this will link to the main image as my magazine will be a special edition for this specific rapper. For the cover lines and the text that is within them, I will use some rhetorical questions and alliteration. The offer will most likely be to win an unreleased soundtrack just by entering online. This will catch people’s eyes because there will be something no one else has and people like that kind of thing. On the contents page, there will be one cover line. This will be linking to another page in the magazine regarding the main rappers new mix tape and where you can get it from. As this is the only cover line, I will make it stand out as much as possible. For the double page spread there will be no cover lines whatsoever, this allows me to talk about the main rapper throughout the whole two pages.

What Institution do I want? (Music Magazine)

Institution

Development hell will be my institution to promote my magazine; this is because they have apps with their company. This can be implemented with my magazine. As my target audience is teenage boys they will surely have a smartphone. This will then allow them to interact with the magazine online. As they already are publishing the dance magazine mixmag which has an app and a website. Again, this could be implemented into my magazine and its ideals as it will appeal to my audience. Also, as most people nowadays are actually connected to the internet, I believe that this could expand the target audience to people who have never experienced rap or never had an interest into it to fully listen to it or read it.

Target Audience Stereotypes (Music Magazine)

Target Audience/Stereotypes

With my rap magazine, I have targeted the social group/stereotype of teenage boys that stereo typically wear tracksuits all the time. The way I represented my main star on the front page is the way my target audience is stereotyped to look like, however as they read further into the magazine the way the story represents my main star is in a good light. He raps about things other than guns, killing, drugs, sex and death.. There are a few colours on my magazine, mainly black and red. Through research, I have seen that a lot of the magazines regarding rap follow a colour scheme just like this so for the intended audience it won’t be too much of a change within the colour department. The language I have used on my front page is informal which links to my research of rap magazines. My Target audience isn't really formal or higher class.
